The Reijgersdaal or Reygersdahl (pronounced REE - jerz - doll), a Dutch East India Company merchant ship, was lost on October 26th, 1747 after striking a reef while trying to hold anchor in heavy seas off the west coast of South Africa. The vessel, sailing out of Amsterdam, carried over 30,000 Spanish colonial coins as part of her cargo for trade at ports in the Spice Islands of the East Indies. Salvage operations in 1979, conducted by South Africans Arthur Ridge and Jimmy Rawe, resulted in the recovery of nearly 6,800 coins, most of them of the 8 reales "pillar dollar" variety struck at the Spanish colonial mint located in Mexico City. Certificates of Authenticity accompany all Reijgersdaal Shipwreck treasure coins. Original Reijgersdaal certificates of authenticity come in two types. Type 1 certificates are accompanied by an additional document covering the ships loss, both are protected in a 5 1/2 by 4 inch brown vinyl wallet. Type 2 certificates are brief documents printed on 5 3/4 by 4 inch card stock, since they are brief, they are always supplied with a New World Treasures certificate of authenticity that covers the ships loss and recovery.
