1733 Fleet Gold Cross

The 1733 Spanish Treasure Fleet was driven into the shallow waters of the Florida Keys by strong hurricane force winds the evening of July 15th 1733.  Since the ships were relatively intact and located in shallow water, the Spanish salvors were able to salvage nearly everything of value, leaving only a small amount of artifacts to be found by modern day treasure hunters.

Certificate
This very ornate gold cross is one of the very rare artifacts recovered from the 1733 Fleet in modern times.  It was recovered from the San Ignacio by Duke Long, a Florida Keys salvage diver and is accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity signed by Jim Sinclair, Mel Fishers Archeologist.  The crucifix most likely belonged to a member of the Catholic Church, possibly a priest on his journey back to Spain.  Note the intricate details in these close up views of the cross obverse and reverse, Jesus is displayed on the obverse with INRI inscribed above and the cross arms are inscribed with a pattern of X's with dots between them, which represents the cross of St. Andrew.  Also note the coral deposits on the rose of sharon (symbol of Christ) at the ends of the cross arm, three of which are adorned with a fleur de leis, the symbol of trinity.  This is the first time this piece has been offered for sale in over 40 years.  I'm not sure how to price this seemingly priceless artifact, but I'm sure it's well worth many times the asking price. In addition to the certificate off authenticity, a two page description of the cross is also supplied (page 1) and (page 2).
